    San Francisco, California - 2011

    A year on Tumblr

I used to be a fan of taking long exposures and this was one of my favourite photographs taken in San Francisco back in 2011. I remember waking up early in the morning before sunrise and heading off to Bay Bridge with no idea of what I wanted to take a photograph of. I walked around a bit looking for the right subject and then I saw these pillars poking out of the sea. It was very difficult composing this photograph as I wanted to include more of the pillars on the left but there was a barrier right in front me of and I couldn’t move the the camera any lower. I was very disappointed about that but still decided to take the shot as the light was really nice and I couldn’t resist

    Marrakech, Morocco - 2013

    A year on Tumblr

One of my most challenging times in photography was when I was in Marrakech. Its a custom in Marrakech that people don’t want to have their photos taken, so trying to do street photography there was very tricky and frustrating at times. I had to come up with ways to not get noticed, which is very hard as I looked more like a tourist than a local.

After a couple of days with no good photographs that I was proud of, I decided to not stress about it and enjoyed my time in Marrakech instead. There was an alleyway that I always took to go back to my hotel and I noticed how good it would look as a backdrop with the light coming through. So one evening I stood in the dark alleyway pretending to do something and waited for the right subject to come along and there she was, a lady heading back home with a plastic bag filled with goods. I liked how both the colour of the backdrop and her dress complemented each other.

One thing this photograph also embodies is the anonymity of the people of Marrakech. If you do want to take photos in Marrakech, either photograph by stealth or make friends with the locals.

    Lake District - 2012

    A year on Tumblr

During my first year of photography, I took part in a few tours where I got to go to amazing locations and knowledge share with other photographers. It’s funny how you get so creative when surrounded by other photographers especially ones that you gain inspirations from and others who do amazing work! This photograph was taken during a tour in The Lake District. It was my first tour and I was really apprehensive! During a walk, I noticed this landscape and had an idea of how to compose a photograph for it but the weather was really bad so I decided not to take the photograph. Unfortunately during the tour I didn’t get the chance to come back to the exact location, luckily I was scheduled to stay another night at the hotel after the tour ended.

So the next day I decided to make my way back to the location and waited for the right moment. As time went by, the light got better and just before the sun set I took the shot!

One thing I learnt about photography is to take a step back and be patient when taking a photograph. This is something I always strive to do.

    Bondi, Sydney - 2013

    A year on Tumblr

When I take abstract photographs I like to compose using different techniques, like the use of lines (vertical, horizontal, diagonal, s-curve and implied) as a way of leading the viewer around the frame and exploring the different textures of the shot. This photograph was taken in Sydney on a cliff walk from Bondi to Coogee, there are a lot of rock formations along this route at edge of the cliff and by the sea and I found numerous abstract opportunities here.

    A year on Tumblr

I mistakenly deleted the original post with all the likes but ah well here goes….

As well as photography, I also have a keen interest in gardening. On a trip to Amsterdam, I picked up a Calla Lily bulb and planted it on my balcony. One late afternoon whilst looking outside I noticed how wonderful the light was and it made me want to take a photo. So I looked around the balcony for inspiration, and decided to take a photo of the Calla Lily. I liked the shape and curve of the petal and wanted to show this in the photo so I composed the frame around one single flower.

It’s funny how you end up taking a photo of something you see everyday and not realising the beauty of it.

    Leicester Square, London - 2013

    A year on Tumblr

This was one of the first photographs I posted when I joined Tumblr, I remember facing the backdrop from the opposite side of the street close to the traffic lights and liking how the horizontal lines, vertical lines, light and shadows worked well together. What was lacking in the composition was a subject that connected it all together, so I waited for the right subject to come along. I didn’t have in mind what kind of subject I wanted in the frame, but what I’d planned was where to place the subject and I wanted to capture a sense of movement and loneliness.

    A year on Tumblr

It has been a year since I started this blog on Tumblr and what an awesome year it has been with a lot of support from my followers and other photography blogs.

For the next 10 days, I’ll be posting my top 10 most liked photographs (not in any order) each day and sharing how I went about taking the shot and/or the story behind it.

    Thanks and enjoy!
